Neck Pain
Neck pain is a broad subject as it can be caused by a variety of problems and are interrelated. According to U.S public health services’ about t 85% of adults suffer from neck pain at some point of their lives. Some of the conditions related to neck include neck strain, Cervical spondylosis, Herniated disc, cervical spinal stenosis and whip lash.
Neck Strain
Neck strain is injury to the muscles and tendons that support and move the neck and head. It can be caused by motor vehicle accident, abnormal posture, and work related repetitive movements and posture which puts the neck in prolonged extension. The fundamental symptom of neck strain is pain. Other symptoms may include inability to perform daily activities, stiffness in neck. When the nerves are involved you may feel numbness, tingling, weakness, incoordination or dizziness.
Arthritis of Neck
The medical terminology for arthritis of neck is cervical spondylosis. It occurs due to the normal wear and tear of facet joint of the neck. Cervical spine is made up of first seven vertebrae that are stacked up on top of one another. There is a rubbery piece of cartilage between these vertebrae and is called the intervertebral disk. As we age, wear and tear of the bones, discs and joint occurs. It may result in decrease in height, osteophytes (bone spurs), loss of joint cartilage and thickening of bone. Subsequently, it will put pressure on the spinal cord as well as nerves. Patients with minor cervical spondylosis may feel little or no symptoms. Patients may experience pain and stiffness of the neck .When the nerves and spinal cord are involved, weakness or numbness in neck, shoulder, arms or hands, and upper back are felt. In some cases patient may experience headaches. Usually the symptoms may increase during repetitive movements, slouching and during end of range neck movements.
Cervical Stenosis
It occurs when the spinal canal narrows. The spinal canal consists of the spinal cord which is a collection of nerves that run from the base of the brain to the lower back. When the spinal canal narrows it compresses the nerve roots or the spinal cord itself may get injured. Spinal stenosis is most common in people who are fifty or older. Cervical spinal stenosis may occur due to degenerative disc disease and cervical spondylosis. Symptoms may include weakness or numbness in neck, shoulder, arms or hands, and upper back. It may also cause balance and co-ordination problems as well as incontinence.
Degenerative disc disease
Cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae that are stacked up on top of one another. There is a rubbery piece of cartilage between these vertebrae and is called the intervertebral disk. Imagine disk as a tire with gelatin kind of substance on the hole of the tire. The tire (outer part) is called the annulus and the gelatin type of substance is called the nucleus. It aids in stabilizing as well as in the movement of the neck. It also provide cushion and act as shock absorbers. As we age, or due to some injury, wear and tear occurs and we start to lose gelatin type of substance and hence the volume of the disk decreases. As a result, the space the vertebrae decreases and the disk becomes flatter and less flexible .When the rough surface of the vertebral joint rub together, inflammation occurs and may feel pain as the nerves get compressed or irritated. It may occur throughout the spine or may confine to one disk. The evident symptoms may include neck pain and stiffness of neck.
Whiplash
Whiplash injuries are suffered by most of the victims involved motor vehicle accident. Over 200 million people suffer from whiplash in U.S. Rear impact motor vehicle accident can cause sudden abnormal motion in the neck. You may also suffer from symptoms like headache, neck pain, and stiffness in neck, shoulder pain and dizziness.
